Generally I think of the UK as a good country, but there are problems. Keeping 60m people on an island, you're gonna get problems there's no doubt about that. It's a sad thing that these problems are then used as an excuse for people to do what they want.
Yes, initially there was no doubting people wanted to peacefully protest about the shooting of Mark Duggan, as is their right to do so, and I would never deny anybody that right. If it came to something that my community cared about I'd hope we'd do the same. However, this peaceful protest was hijacked by people who, chances are, didn't give a flying fuck about the cause or reason, they just wanted to kick off.
I've heard many experts of the TV trying to explain away the reasons behind the rioting, I've heard it's police attitude, living conditions, no doubt someone had suggested it's cos they're daddy doesn't love them any more. Bullshit, these people want high end free stuff and suddenly this opportunity to loot en masse and they took it, knowing full well in the numbers they were the police would struggle to cope.
Lives were put at risk, livelihoods were destroyed just because someone wanted the thrill or setting fire to buildings. I'm by no means right wing but if the call was mine, on a strictly watching from a distance anger and frustration point of view, there would have been soldiers, armed police the works. If they want to create hell... fuck 'em.
Some of these morons even bragged on twitter/facebook "Yo biatches I got maself I new plasma last night" or a variation of. Thankfully people seemed to pick this up and forward on names etc to the police. These are the same 'protesters' that were so brave facing up to police they'd run up, throw something and immediately leg it incase they missed and the police smacked them one. Only problem there is the cop would probably be made into a villan and all police made to only use foam mallets in riot situations.
Some of the kids that have been interviewed, particularly those ones on the BBC yesterday, have come across as thick, mindless and many things I'm too polite to point out. Clearly no knowledge of the situation, using the pretence of 'sticking it to the man', well yeah if the 'man' is a independent business owner struggling to get by as it is, or someone renting a now destroyed flat who is temporarily homeless. Idiots.
Oops those right wing thoughts are back again. Honestly, if my daughter turns out like these morons, she's going to boarding school. Forever.
As you may be aware, as it says it on the top of the page, I'm from South Wales and rumours were flying last night about trouble in Cardiff, theer was little, it seems like about 7 14 year olds tried breaking into JD sports and something on Cowbridge road realised they didn't have a clue what they were doing and legged it before the police arrived. But still, these kids have obviously seen London/Birmingham/Manchester etc (even Gloucester last night?? Seriously??) as something to be aspired too, they fancied some new Reebok Classics an iPod touch and one of those bendy sausages from Wimpy (I mean honestly... looting Wimpy on Monday... that must be mindless violence as there's little to steal) for free and thought they'd try their luck.
There were facebook messages being sent round trying to incite rioting, however thankfully the Welsh either can't be arsed (which judging by our history is unlikely) or couldn't see the point. Kudos to all the Cardiff Chavs.
I think London may be done, extra police, the condemnation of Mark Duggans family, all may have helped the situation, but now it's spread, will things carry on in Manchester and Birmingham tonight? Probably yes, but with a bit of luck the police will soon be in control and can get started on locking these motherlovers up.
Finally massive respect of the riot clean up people. This shows what the UK is really about, helping out and getting back to normality. Thankfully none needed by me, but I like to think I'd help if there were (and work would give me the day off).

Royal Wedding II The Continuation
Some months ago I wrote basically of my complete lack of interest in the forthcoming royal wedding well the time has come, on Friday, which despite my earlier promises that I'd happily go to work on the day... I'm not, as I haven't got too, the two rich posh people will have their giant partially public funded wedding. Can you see how the enthusiasm has build up for me?? Can you tell how much I'm now looking forward to the event I once derided?? Nor me, still think it's a massive waste of hype and column inches.
While the darling other half was watching channel 5 there was even a cheap ass, lame, stupid, painfully romanticised TV movie of how they met. I mean honestly, who would watch that? Is it even accurate, I somehow doubt they were consulted on the script!
TV is preparing to be taken over by constant overage, 'expert' analysis of every insignificant detail, I mean 8 hours solid non ITV... Jesus wept. The entire police force of the country it seems will be in London making sure some nutter with a flag doesn't get within 5 yards of any of the important people. I mean honestly, if you ever wanted to commit minor crime, they're all too busy, now's your moment! It all just seems like a horrible horrible resource hole and more is getting poured down it all the time. Much like the olympics.
Tat has appeared in shops, I've seen mass produced fake hand drawings of the couple, and indeed of each individually, teatowels, cups, coins, all crap! But I suppose someone must be buying it. I'll not be attending a street party and I don't know of anyone who is, thankfully. I don't actually know of any street parties so maybe there is some sanity in the world yet, or at least in Merthyr, and it's not often you can say that with a straight face.
Really it's a good thing, my pure desire to avoid this... event + the time off = day with Gracie n Cerys, see I can find the positives in anything!

Osborne, butcher of downing street or saviour of our economy?
OK, who could have possibly predicted I'd use this space today to rant/praise the governments cuts? Everyone? Well congratulations everyone you were right!
Before I get started, I will say thank you Sky f**king News (keeping it clean-ish) for once again using my home town of Merthyr Tydfil as a demonstration of the 'bottom end of the barrel'. Really, they produced one biased, set up report once and now they want to turn the screw. Merthyr may be a dive, and believe me there are parts that would make your eyes bleed, but it's not the worst, not by a long shot.
Anyway to open, I work in the private sector, my job doesn't reply on the government, although the company itself has never been shy of a handout/grant etc which may not be quite so forthcoming in future, but generally despite yesterday, I'm confident my job is secure. However, I do feel for the 500,000 public sector workers who will be out of work once the condems are done. It could have been me, I had the opportunity of taking a job as an analyst with South Wales Police not long ago, but stayed where I was. I can be pretty sure if I had moved, I'd be right in the firing line now.
From scanning what's happened, I do feel it could have been worse. E.g. The NHS is getting rises (small ones really but at least it's not cuts, not even cuts against inflation) but for the most part, I can only say I'm feeling far from confident.
I've blogged previously on my thoughts for university changes and they've come to fruition, but other things such as cuts in police budgets and welfare budgets don't sound promising. Regarding benefit cuts, there are people out there who cheat the system, get more than they deserve and they've in no small way contributed to overspends, my concern is, with sweeping cuts are they going to really be able to filter out the deserving from the scrounger? I do have a horrible feeling the scrounger will continue to try and find ways around the system, while the genuine people will suffer. But that's the way of the world these days.
Also, I'm waiting to see exactly how half a million extra dole claimers will combine with less money available for them...
Police cuts are also a concern, 4% a year will hurt them, and at a time where their jobs are getting increasingly difficult. There's a risk that they may lose some front line officers (although doubtless savings can be made elsewhere too), while at the same time crime may rise in a poorer environment, leading too.. well not ideal circumstances. But I may be being a drama queen, we would have to wait to see what the police cut before jumping to conclusions.
Plus aren't interest payments going to rise for the next few years???
