Wales, most of the year is a dark, dreary cold place to live, out summers are pleasant but rarely... continental. But every now and again, we break from tradition and have an unexpected hot(ter) spell, and I'm sweating in the middle of one now.
Sadly, the rarity of these blue skied outbursts really goes to peoples heads. Yes, it's warm, but no, man by ponty bus station, nobody wants to see your middle aged gut in a vest and floral shorts, let alone your hairy feet in flip flops, it's just not on. As soon as the sun comes out 45,000 chavs appear with no tops on drinking strongbow in every beer garden for 25 square miles. The very thought that this 2 week period of relative heat may be it for the summer gets these people into such a blind panic that common sense goes straight out the window.
I'm a moderate fan of the heat, but very rarely and in much hotter climates have I ever felt the urge for a bit of public disrobing (Then it was just the shirt). I work in an air-con free office and if you open the window not only is there no wind to speak of to cool you down, but the birds have a habit of shitting on it, it's not an overly comfortable place to be at the moment, but this doesn't mean I'm going to turn up to work with my moobs flopping about the place contained only by a primark vest and my stinking feet on full display.
On route to this bus this morning I have already come across one chav in sunglasses, vest and shorts, it was 7am and cold... Still at least it was excellent golf weather Sunday!
The sensationalist media will probably kick off any moment, half will be proclaiming UK hotter than surface of sun, while half will be predicting all of our deaths via global warming and skin cancer, oh and the sun thanking Simon Cowell for bringing the sun to the UK (as it shines from his backside).
So overall, chavs... keep the top on, it's still March and I've only just eaten.

UK Riots
Generally I think of the UK as a good country, but there are problems. Keeping 60m people on an island, you're gonna get problems there's no doubt about that. It's a sad thing that these problems are then used as an excuse for people to do what they want.
Yes, initially there was no doubting people wanted to peacefully protest about the shooting of Mark Duggan, as is their right to do so, and I would never deny anybody that right. If it came to something that my community cared about I'd hope we'd do the same. However, this peaceful protest was hijacked by people who, chances are, didn't give a flying fuck about the cause or reason, they just wanted to kick off.
I've heard many experts of the TV trying to explain away the reasons behind the rioting, I've heard it's police attitude, living conditions, no doubt someone had suggested it's cos they're daddy doesn't love them any more. Bullshit, these people want high end free stuff and suddenly this opportunity to loot en masse and they took it, knowing full well in the numbers they were the police would struggle to cope.
Lives were put at risk, livelihoods were destroyed just because someone wanted the thrill or setting fire to buildings. I'm by no means right wing but if the call was mine, on a strictly watching from a distance anger and frustration point of view, there would have been soldiers, armed police the works. If they want to create hell... fuck 'em.
Some of these morons even bragged on twitter/facebook "Yo biatches I got maself I new plasma last night" or a variation of. Thankfully people seemed to pick this up and forward on names etc to the police. These are the same 'protesters' that were so brave facing up to police they'd run up, throw something and immediately leg it incase they missed and the police smacked them one. Only problem there is the cop would probably be made into a villan and all police made to only use foam mallets in riot situations.
Some of the kids that have been interviewed, particularly those ones on the BBC yesterday, have come across as thick, mindless and many things I'm too polite to point out. Clearly no knowledge of the situation, using the pretence of 'sticking it to the man', well yeah if the 'man' is a independent business owner struggling to get by as it is, or someone renting a now destroyed flat who is temporarily homeless. Idiots.
Oops those right wing thoughts are back again. Honestly, if my daughter turns out like these morons, she's going to boarding school. Forever.
As you may be aware, as it says it on the top of the page, I'm from South Wales and rumours were flying last night about trouble in Cardiff, theer was little, it seems like about 7 14 year olds tried breaking into JD sports and something on Cowbridge road realised they didn't have a clue what they were doing and legged it before the police arrived. But still, these kids have obviously seen London/Birmingham/Manchester etc (even Gloucester last night?? Seriously??) as something to be aspired too, they fancied some new Reebok Classics an iPod touch and one of those bendy sausages from Wimpy (I mean honestly... looting Wimpy on Monday... that must be mindless violence as there's little to steal) for free and thought they'd try their luck.
There were facebook messages being sent round trying to incite rioting, however thankfully the Welsh either can't be arsed (which judging by our history is unlikely) or couldn't see the point. Kudos to all the Cardiff Chavs.
I think London may be done, extra police, the condemnation of Mark Duggans family, all may have helped the situation, but now it's spread, will things carry on in Manchester and Birmingham tonight? Probably yes, but with a bit of luck the police will soon be in control and can get started on locking these motherlovers up.
Finally massive respect of the riot clean up people. This shows what the UK is really about, helping out and getting back to normality. Thankfully none needed by me, but I like to think I'd help if there were (and work would give me the day off).

Eurovision
Yes, predictable topic, do I look like I care?
Well I watched it, it'd be a stretch to call it good, it was... what it always is. There's plenty of things you could moan about. The fact that every former Russian state votes for it's fellow former Russian states (maybe they should form some kind of union, a Union of Soviet Socialist Republics if you will), the former Yugoslav countries doing the same, us and Ireland not... (well 1 way).
While these voting 'patterns' exist the UK is never going to win, everyone realistically knows this, so why as one of the 'big 5' (welcome back Italia) do we continue to fund it. The BBC at the moment is quick to bemoan lack of funding, having to stretch it's budget, so why pour money into this giant freak show each year? Last year apparently almost £300,000 was spent on the contest that's without sending our act on promotional tours and them attending, hotels etc, no doubt tonight's 'treat' at least equalled that, and next years will be higher again. Is this a good use of public cash? I think not. Or even if ITV took it over and paid for it with advertising. No hit on the public, no concern of mine.
I've no problem with the UK entering, this year at least it kept Anthony Costa away from cash points for a few weeks and stopped the whole group having to sign on for a while, so it's almost a public service. However, why pay so much? Drop our Big 5 status, take our place in the semi-finals with everyone else, use the £300,000 on better programming at home, sounds like a good solid plan to me. If we don't get to the final, it's unlikely to make much of a difference to the result anyway and I wouldn't have to record Britain's Got Talent for a week.
It's not as if it's a musical treat, this years winners sounded off, especially the 2nd time where no doubt they'd had a glass of champagne or 2 backstage, who wouldn't when rich westerners are supplying? Jedward could barely be heard over their backing singers, blue were surprisingly OK, but nothing more. There were a few random warbelling women, but nothing you think...wow, hand me the album! I doubt iTunes is currently down from the demand of any of the tracks, it's generally... blah.
(The iTuines snide remark prompted me to check... Jedward #40 Blue #16 & 50 Lena #100 (with the 2010 song not this years)
The absolute highlight used to be Terry Wogan, at the end he could almost write the results out before the contest and just hand them in. The fact he'd become so cynical about the contest he almost held it in contempt was never hidden and as a result he was funny and entertaining, something which he still is when interviewed about the show. While Norton took a huge stride in that direction this year, he's not nearly cynical enough to give the contest the commentary it deserves, give him 2 or 3 years and he'll be there though. If it's still on (here's hoping).
Of what I've initially read also, next years host country (as they won it) Azerbaijan is 4 hours ahead of us. But the time will remain constant to satisfy TV in German, France, UK etc. So it'll start at midnight local time and finish at pushing 4am, that's quite crap from their perspective.
Saying all that, I'm now watching Most Haunted, so I may know squat about good TV.
